Labor pains

Squozen hard
from all sides
I am a tender babe
I want to reach my arms out
To kick
To flail
But all pressure
crushes me inward
Towards center
Even crying is garbled
All I can do really
is trust the mother
until the way out is clear
Maybe squirm a little
If that helps
And pray
that she keeps pushing

And I am the mother too
In hard labor
I’ve reached that point
where I’m ready to give up
Where I need a midwife
to cheer me on:
“Keep pushing!“
