Sweet Water

(ode to Oregon)

Woven in your
tangled wood
Spider spun
in your web
Your boughs
become my breath

Birds trill
from the treetops
Soar over
the ridges
Friendly bear
in the shadows
Awaits his turn
at the blackberries

People are kind
A little wild
Like the bark
of a tree
But strip the bark
to find the sweet cambium

Oh Oregon
Your nectar
does burst forth!
And I fall to my knees
for your sweet water
Sweet water

Written in the southern New Mexico desert
